I was really surprised not only find out that Joomla! 1.5 is going through a third release candidate, but will likely be followed with more release candidates. In most projects, the release candidate is a nearly-done final product where the only thing left is to make sure all the i's are dotted and all the t's are crossed. Not so with Joomla! 1.5.

Last week, I mentioned that Mozilla is planning to give the Firefox browser a makeover. Alex Faaborg had mentioned that they plan to integrate the look of Firefox with Microsoft's Windows Vista and Apple's Mac OS X. The problem was Alex had failed to mention anything about the Linux operating system. Linux users, of course, then replied by comment that they were unhappy that there was no mention of Linux in the post.
I make it a habit not to post community squabbles that often take place in any IT project (whether open source or not). When people have the best intentions and respect the opinions of others, I don't believe it is right for me or anyone else to publicly exploit discussions that are meant to remain within the community. However, the conflicts going on at XOOPS.org have been made so public that it's hard for me to put a lot of faith in a project that treats its own people so poorly.
I'm still in need to read this InfoWorld article in its entirety, but thought it was worth mentioning now. InfoWorld's Mike Heck has written an article, Open source CMSes prove well worth the price, which reviews and compares five content management systems. The five CMS under review are Alfresco, DotNetNuke, Drupal, Joomla, and Plone.
The good news is that all five CMS ranked Very Good or higher. However, Alfresco was the only CMS that ranked Excellent with a score of 9.2. Plone 3.0 received the second highest ranking with a score of 8.6. DotNetNuke and Joomla tied for third and fourth place with a score of 8.4 which put Drupal a fraction lower with a score of 8.3. While none of these CMS ranked poorly, I'm sure the open source communities are bound to scrutinize over how the individual criteria were scored and ranked.
On Monday, Packt Publishing announced the five finalists in each category of its 2007 Open Source Content Management System Award. The five categories are Most Promising, Best PHP CMS, Best Other (Non-PHP) CMS, Best Social Networking CMS, and Overall Winner. In the finals stage, the public as a whole is eligible to vote for each category through October 26th. While that may seem like a long time for the polls to be open, I'd encourage you to vote early so that you have no excuse for why your favorite CMS didn't make it to the winners list.
Around this time last year, Packt Publishing announced the "top five" finalists for their award (no separate categories in 2006). In 2006, those CMS projects that made it to the finalist list included Drupal, e107, Joomla, Plone, and Xoops. When those five CMS were announced, I chose to double my efforts on covering those applications here at CMS Report. Although the extra categories this year have brought quite a few more Open Source CMS into the foreground, I still don't see why I couldn't keep most of them on my CMS Focus radar scope. With 16,000 people nominating their favorite CMS for this award, that amount of generated interest is hard to ignore. Luckily, I already cover many of the CMS that did make it as a finalist...but there are still many new CMS on that list that will shake things up a bit here at CMSReport.com.
We Americans can be so stupid at times. In the country of "land of the free", we spend too much of our efforts working to restrict the freedom of others.

MySiouxFalls.com is a new and local online news source for the city where I currently reside, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At first, I was not all that excited about the site and had not plan on mentioning the MySiouxFalls.com site in my writing. We've all seen these sites before, right? In fact, I would say that many of the visitors to this blog likely have designed or participated in building sites similar to MySiouxFalls.com. That's not to say that there are not some things from a content management perspective worth mentioning.
